Euston Weir Pool Operation

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) and State Water today advised of the potential for the Euston Weir pool to be lowered below full supply level (FSL) of 47.6 m AHD, after the current high flows past Euston recede.

To allow the passage of high flows, the 'stop logs' and navigable pass panels were removed to allow the flood water to pass through with minimal obstructions. However, as major refurbishment of the navigable pass was under construction, the steel needle beams and trestles were left in place. During the flood recession, the stop logs and navigable pass will need to be reinstated. It is possible that debris accumulation will be more than experienced in previous floods. At this stage the River Murray at Euston is expected to recede around mid- February.

During the high flows, debris has, and may continue, to collect around the weir structure and the extent of the debris cannot be fully assessed until the level of the river at Euston falls. The weir cannot be reinstated to maintain a weir pool until all debris is removed

Currently the level at Euston is around 2 m above FSL. Whilst every effort will be made to remove the debris as quickly as possible, it cannot be guaranteed that this can be completed whilst the weir pool is still above FSL. As such, the water level may temporarily fall below full supply level at Euston Weir, before the weir is reinstated.
