 Blue green algae bloom Red Alert Warning at Mildura29 March 2010 Murray Regional Algal Coordinating Committee The Sunraysia Regional Algal Coordinating Committee today issued a red alert for the Murray River at Mildura. Chairman of the committee Owen Russell said that new results have indicated that the red alert in the lower Murray now extends from Mt Dispersion through to Merbein. Local residents and visitors should avoid any water that appears bright green, where obvious green scums are present in the Murray River at the Mildura Wharf and Marina. Other areas in the Murray Region have shown a reduction in the numbers of blue green algae. ‘Amber alerts now exist for the Murray River from Albury to Corowa, Murray River from Torrumbarry Weir to Swan Hill, the Murray River at Robinvale-Euston and for the full length of the Edward River. “An amber alert means that the waters are safe for all recreational uses such as swimming, water skiing and fishing,” he said. Under a red alert, the waters maybe unsuitable for recreational use or primary contact by domestic users and may also pose a threat to livestock and domestic animals. “The blooms appear to be moving quickly through the river in the lower parts of the Murray River, however with the return of the warmer weather, it is likely that the blooms may reappear and all water users are advised to be cautious before entering any water body.” Town water supplies on both sides of the Murray River continue to be treated with powder activated carbon and all water users and holiday makers are advised to take drinking water from town water supplies.
