Under regulated flow conditions and due to the northern rivers being long and flat, it is not practical to provide regulated releases from the northern Basin storages to replenish water in Menindee Lakes. It is only during flood conditions that the northern Basin is connected to the southern Basin. This assessment of water in storage does not include water in private storage.

Water in private storages in the Northern Basin is estimated by the relevant State water agencies to be 1637GL as of 31 March 2010. The next update of private water storage information will be released in July 2010.
