Two complaints made by the Murray–Darling Basin Authority about the ABC's Background Briefing series titled Best laid plans: The Murray–Darling Basin in crisis have been upheld. The program and a facebook video were found not to comply with the ABC's editorial standards for accuracy and impartiality.

The complaints were made to the ABC's Audience and Consumer Affairs concerning the three part series that was broadcast on 29 April, 6 May and 11 May 2018, and the ABC News Facebook video post published on 26 April 2018.

Complaints were upheld against the following standards:

  • Two concerning standard 2.1: Make reasonable efforts to ensure that material facts are accurate and presented in context.
  • One concerning standard 2.2: Do not present factual content in a way that will materially mislead the audience. In some cases, this may require appropriate labels or other explanatory information.
  • Three concerning standard 4.5: Do not unduly favour one perspective over another.

The MDBA thanks the ABC for its investigation and careful consideration of the issues raised. A summary of the investigation findings is available on the ABC complaints page and on the corrections page.
