Capturing the legacy of the Murray and Mitta Mitta biological (macroinvertebrate) monitoring program

In 2014 the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) provided funding to the Murray–Darling Basin Freshwater Research Centre to document the legacy of two long-term biological (macroinvertebrate) monitoring projects developed by the MDBA through its water quality monitoring program.

This report summarises how The River Murray and the Mitta Mitta River Biological Monitoring Projects are unique and have been fundamental to:

  • describe the biodiversity of macroinvertebrate fauna
  • gauge the distribution of endangered species
  • evaluate the spread of invasive species
  • determine the health of the rivers in response to climate, flow, water quality and river management changes.
