Barmah Choke study reports

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority undertook a three year study (2009–12) on the Barmah Choke to investigate the potential water supply and environmental risks. These risks are associated with river regulation through the Barmah Choke, the study considered the available options to improve the management of river flows in the mid-Murray region.

The Barmah choke study was conducted in three phases

Phase 1 – the Investigations phase considered

  • Changes to channel capacity
  • The frequency and magnitude of system shortfalls under the current regulated river system and the impact of predicted changed climate conditions.
  • How the current regulated river system has changed unseasonal flooding of the Barmah–Millewa forest and how predicted climate change is likely to influence these events.

Phase 2 – Individual options phase

Considered individual options, with the aim of identifying a preferred option, or option packages, for reducing the impact of these issues. The range of options associated with the limited capacity of the Barmah Choke can be grouped into a number of broad categories:

  • bypass capacity options
  • upper system storage options
  • lower system storage
  • policy options

Phase 3 – Options integration Phase

The Options Integration Phase, builds upon the findings of the Individual Options Phase. Integrated packages of options are assessed based on their combined potential to address the issues associated with the Barmah Choke. The ultimate aim being to provide recommendations on options or packages of options to manage the issues associated with the Barmah Choke.
