Hydrological and hydrodynamic modelling supports informed decision making at the MDBA. The following technical reports were produced or commissioned by MDBA to ensure the best technical knowledge underpinning our decisions.

Model reviews to support water resource plan assessments
Review of Nebine IQQM model as method for determining permitted take

As part of the WRP accreditation process the MDBA is reviewing the modelling provided by states in line with the requirements of the Basin Plan. Reviews are carried out in accordance with the MDBA’s regulatory approach statement and Position Statement 3C.

Independent Review of Generation 2 Hydrological Models for: Border Rivers, Condamine-Balonne and Moonie Valleys

An independent review of the suitability of a suite of hydrological models prepared by Queensland Hydrology to support Queensland’s proposed WRPs for the Border Rivers, Condamine-Balonne and Moonie Valleys within the northern Murray–Darling Basin.

Independent Review of the Source Model of the Murray and Lower Darling Rivers (SMM)

As part of the WRP accreditation process the MDBA is reviewing the modelling provided by states in line with the requirements of the Basin Plan. As the MDBA is the developer of the SMM, an independent review was sought to undertake this task in relation to the SMM to maintain the impartiality of the process.

Review of the New South Wales Border Rivers models used to calculate the baseline diversion limit and permitted take – 2021

An independent review of the hydrological models that underpinned the NSW Border Rivers water resource plan (WRP) that was submitted to the MDBA in June 2020 and subsequently withdrawn. These models were built using the eWater Source software. The review assessed whether the models used the best available information at the time and were consistent with MDBA’s Position Statement 3C.

The models in this independent review have been updated by NSW since this review was completed, and are expected to be provided to the MDBA as part of an updated WRP submission in 2022. A further review of the revised models will be undertaken by the MDBA as part of the WRP assessment process.

Representing urban water demand on the Murray and Lower Darling rivers
South Australian Resource Assessment in the Source Murray Model

South Australian Resource Assessment is the process by which the South Australian Government decides how to release and distribute to users and hold in reserve the water that South Australia is allocated each month under the Murray–Darling Basin Agreement. This report describes the implementation of the South Australian Resource Assessment and South Australian water ordering in the Source model of the Murray and Lower Darling System. 

Irrigation demands on the Murray and Lower Darling rivers

This report documents how irrigation diversions are represented in the Source model of the Murray and Lower Darling System.

Independent Review of the Murray and Lower Darling Rivers (SMM) as a candidate for the future BDL/BSMS2030/WRP Model

Source Murray Model was independently reviewed before being used to support to the Salinity Management Strategy (BSMS 2030) and the Basin Plan implementation.

This report presents the outcomes of that review to assess whether Source Murray Model represents the best available information, and is developed according to good modelling practice.
